Meta descriptions: do they still matter, and how to write them
Google says meta descriptions are not a ranking factor, and it rewrites them often. So why bother? Because when it uses yours, a good one wins clicks you would otherwise lose. Here is how to write them fast and well.
The meta description is the short paragraph under the blue title in a search result. Google has said for years that it isn't used as a ranking signal. It also frequently ignores the description you wrote and shows a snippet from the page instead.
So it's tempting to skip it. Don't, at least not for pages that matter. A clear description is your best chance to persuade a searcher who's comparing ten results at once.

Key takeaways from this guide
What it is and where it lives
<meta name="description" content="Root canal treatment in Pune at SmileCare: single-visit options, transparent pricing from ₹4,500 and a dentist who explains every step. Book online.">
WordPress SEO plugins and most site builders have a "Meta description" field. If it's empty, Google builds a snippet from the page text.
How long should it be?
Google truncates by pixel width. On desktop that's roughly 155–160 characters; on mobile it can be a bit longer or shorter depending on the device. A practical target is 120–155 characters, with the most important information in the first 100 or so, in case it gets cut.
Preview it with our SERP snippet preview, which shows desktop and mobile versions side by side.
A simple formula
What the page offers + a specific detail + a reason or call to act.
- What: "Root canal treatment in Pune"
- Detail: "single-visit options, prices from ₹4,500"
- Reason: "a dentist who explains every step. Book online."
Don't repeat the title word for word. The description should add information the title couldn't fit.

Why Google rewrites descriptions
Google picks the snippet it thinks best matches the specific search. If someone searches "root canal recovery time" and your description talks about prices, Google may show a sentence from your page about recovery instead. That's actually good: the snippet is matching their question.
Rewrites are more likely when the description is missing, generic, duplicated across pages, or stuffed with keywords. Well-written, specific descriptions are used more often, especially for the page's main search terms.
Do you need one on every page?
Prioritise. Write unique descriptions for:
- the homepage and main service or category pages,
- your top 20–50 pages by impressions in Search Console,
- any page you're actively trying to improve.
For thousands of product pages, a well-built template is fine: "Buy [product] in [colour] – [key spec]. [Price], [delivery promise]." That's far better than identical descriptions everywhere, which is one of the issues our free SEO audit flags.
Common mistakes
- Same description on every page, usually from a theme setting.
- Keyword lists instead of sentences.
- Quotes in the text can cut the description off in some setups; avoid double quotes or escape them.
- Promises the page doesn't keep: "free shipping" when it isn't.
- Clickbait: you might win the click and lose the visitor in three seconds.
Descriptions outside Google
When a page is shared on WhatsApp, Facebook or LinkedIn, the preview card often uses your Open Graph description, or falls back to the meta description if there isn't one. A description written for people, not for keywords, works well in both places. If you want a different, more conversational line for social shares, set og:description separately; our Open Graph guide shows how.
Writing many descriptions quickly
Start from the page's first paragraph and its main selling point, then trim. Our meta description generator gives you a few variations to edit, and the meta tags checker confirms what's live and how long it is. Frequently asked questions
Are meta descriptions a ranking factor?
No, Google has said they are not used for ranking. They matter because they can influence whether people click your result.
What is the best meta description length?
Around 120 to 155 characters. Put the key information first, because Google cuts longer descriptions based on pixel width.
Why does Google ignore my meta description?
Google shows the text it thinks best matches each search. If another part of your page answers the query better, or your description is generic or duplicated, it may use page text instead.
Should every page have a unique meta description?
Important pages should. For very large catalogues, a template that includes each product's specific details is a practical alternative to writing thousands by hand.
